Airport HVAC at a glance

Airports are among the largest single-site HVAC projects in the world. A tier-1 international terminal at 30-50 million passengers/year capacity carries an HVAC duct package of USD 80-200 million across passenger terminal, baggage handling, jet bridges, food service, retail and back-of-house. Larger projects exceed this: Riyadh King Salman International (120 mppa target) is USD 400-600M HVAC duct alone; the new Western Sydney International Airport (Nancy-Bird Walton, AUD 5.3B+ total) carries an AUD 100-150M HVAC duct package across the terminal and supporting buildings.

SBKJ machinery is the standard fabrication equipment for these airport duct packages. SBAL-V auto duct lines run multi-shift for 12-24 months continuous to deliver the volume; SBTF spiral tubeformers handle round duct for retail, atrium and concourse. TDF flange formers achieve the SMACNA Class A leakage performance required for stairwell pressurisation and atrium smoke management.

Airport facility types and HVAC requirements

  • Passenger terminal: High-volume air handling, fabric duct in retail, displacement ventilation in atria, perimeter slot diffusers at glazing, underfloor air distribution (UFAD) for office and lounge.
  • Airside operations: Baggage handling, gate areas, sterile zone with negative pressure relative to clean side.
  • Jet bridges (aerobridges): Dedicated AHU per bridge 5,000-15,000 cfm. 316L stainless preferred for coastal/tropical airports.
  • MRO hangars: 40,000-80,000 m³ for wide-body, hangar door air curtain, dedicated fueling exhaust (NFPA 415).
  • ATC tower: Dedicated humidity-controlled environment for radar and comms equipment, redundancy required.
  • Cargo terminal: Large volumes, low cooling load, refrigerated cargo zones for pharmaceutical and fresh produce.
  • Fuel farm: ATEX/IECEx zone classification, leak detection, dedicated ventilation per NFPA 415.
  • Ground service buildings: GSE workshops, catering kitchen prep, cleaning facilities.

SBKJ machinery for airport projects

  • SBAL-V auto duct production line (galvanised): Standard for terminal rectangular supply, baggage handling, MRO hangar HVAC. SMACNA Class A leakage with TDF flange.
  • SBAL-V auto duct line (stainless): Tropical/coastal airports requiring 316L stainless for humidity and salt aerosol resistance.
  • SBTF spiral tubeformer: Round duct for retail, atrium, concourse, jet bridge supply.
  • TDF flange former: Tight-leakage SMACNA Class A flange for stairwell pressurisation, smoke management ductwork.
  • Welded duct fabrication equipment: Fire-rated welded longitudinal seam for some smoke management applications.
