Battery gigafactories are among the most demanding industrial HVAC environments in the world. Cell assembly clean dry rooms operate at dewpoints of -40°C to -60°C (typical commercial cold storage operates at -25°C dewpoint, by comparison) with 30-60 air changes per hour, simultaneously managing high latent loads from electrode coating, NMP solvent vapour from the coating oven exhaust, formation and aging heat load, and the catastrophic risk of lithium thermal runaway. The HVAC duct package alone for a 40 GWh-class gigafactory is USD 30-80 million.

The current global wave of battery investment is unprecedented: 240+ gigafactories announced or under construction globally as of 2026, with combined capacity over 7,500 GWh by 2030 (BloombergNEF, IEA). Each project requires stainless and galvanised duct fabrication at scale. Process areas and HVAC requirements

  • Electrode coating: NMP-laden exhaust at 100-200°C, condenser-coil integration with duct system, polyethylene-lined steel or PVDF construction.
  • Calendering, slitting, notching, stacking, can welding: Cell assembly clean dry room at -40 to -60°C dewpoint, ISO 7-8 cleanliness, 304L electropolished stainless supply duct.
  • Electrolyte filling: 20-40 ACH dedicated negative pressure for VOC capture (DMC, EMC, dimethyl carbonate).
  • Formation and aging: 15-25 ACH, high heat load from formation cycle, smoke and gas detection in HVAC for thermal runaway early warning.
  • Pack assembly: 10-15 ACH ISO 8-9, galvanised G90 supply, lower cleanliness than cell assembly.
  • Quality control and laboratory: ISO 7 cleanroom, dedicated AHU, vibration isolation if vibration-sensitive testing.

Each of these projects carries a HVAC duct package of USD 30-80 million depending on capacity and chemistry. SBKJ machinery is installed at the regional mechanical fabricators supplying these projects rather than at the gigafactory itself — the battery cell maker does not manufacture its own ductwork.
