Hydrogen production HVAC at a glance

Hydrogen has a lower flammability limit (LFL) of 4% by volume in air and a wide flammable range up to 75%, making explosion risk the dominant design driver for hydrogen facility HVAC. Combined with the requirement for hydrogen embrittlement-resistant materials (316L stainless rather than carbon steel or galvanised), specific ATEX/IECEx zoning (Zone 1 in electrolyser stack enclosures, Zone 2 in room general atmosphere, Zone 0 inside H2 storage), and the cryogenic challenge of liquid hydrogen at -253°C, hydrogen facility HVAC is one of the most technical industrial environments SBKJ machinery serves.

The current global wave of hydrogen investment is anchored by the Australian Hydrogen Headstart programme (USD 2 billion federal funding, 2023), the Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive (AUD 2/kg green H2 for 10 years), and major project pipelines in Pilbara (Asian Renewable Energy Hub at 26 GW), Murchison (5 GW), Central Queensland (CQ-H2 10 GW), and the Hunter Valley (Origin H2 Hub 1 GW initial). European green H2 capex (Iberdrola, Lhyfe, Air Liquide, Aurubis Hamburg, Hyporta Brunsbuettel) and North American (Plug Power, Air Products Louisiana, Hy Stor Mississippi) add multi-billion-dollar HVAC duct demand through 2030.

Hydrogen production technologies and HVAC implications

  • Alkaline electrolysis (KOH): Mature, lower capex, 70-80% efficiency. HVAC: standard electrolyser room 6-12 ACH, ATEX Zone 2 general, Zone 1 stack enclosure. Suppliers: Nel Hydrogen, John Cockerill, Sunfire.
  • PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane): Higher current density, dynamic response for renewable load following, suitable for variable wind/solar power. HVAC: similar electrolyser room ventilation; tighter feed water quality requires water treatment area HVAC. Suppliers: Plug Power, ITM Power, Cummins, Siemens Energy.
  • SOEC (Solid Oxide Electrolyser Cell): High temperature 700-850°C, 80-90% efficiency, integration with steam reformer or DRI ironmaking. HVAC: high-temperature exhaust handling. Suppliers: Topsoe, Bloom Energy.
  • AEM (Anion Exchange Membrane): Emerging, lower capex than PEM. HVAC: similar to PEM.

SBKJ machinery for hydrogen projects

  • SBAL-V auto duct line (stainless 316L variant): Electrolyser room rectangular duct, green ammonia synthesis loop ventilation, hydrogen-exposed area HVAC.
  • SBAL-V auto duct line (galvanised variant): Compressor room general HVAC, control room (positive-pressure refuge), maintenance workshop, ambient-temperature LH2 plant building.
  • SBTF spiral tubeformer (stainless 316L): Round duct for electrolyser room return, ammonia synthesis exhaust, fluorine and acid scrubber pre-treatment.
  • SBTF spiral tubeformer (galvanised): Round duct for general facility HVAC.
  • TDF flange former: Tight-leakage rectangular flange for hazardous-area duct.
  • Orbital TIG welding station: Stainless welded longitudinal seam for the most aggressive H2 and NH3 exposure areas.

Australian green hydrogen project pipeline

Australia's Hydrogen Headstart programme (USD 2 billion federal funding) and the Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive at AUD 2/kg are driving the largest green hydrogen project pipeline in the world by capacity. Active or near-FID projects include:

  • Asian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH) — Pilbara WA, 26 GW solar+wind, BP-led consortium, primary product green ammonia for export.
  • Western Green Energy Hub — 50 GW concept near Eucla on the WA-SA border, focused on green ammonia.
  • Murchison Hydrogen Renewables — 5 GW concept in WA mid-west.
  • Stanwell Central Queensland Hydrogen Hub (CQ-H2) — 10 GW concept, port of Gladstone export.
  • Origin Hunter Valley H2 Hub — 1 GW initial, NSW Hunter region.
  • Yara Pilbara Renewable Ammonia — demonstration green ammonia project.
  • Bell Bay Powerfuels (Origin/MMG) — Tasmania green ammonia for export.

Each gigawatt-scale project carries a HVAC duct package of USD 8-25 million covering electrolyser building, compressor room, ammonia synthesis loop, control room and maintenance workshops. SBKJ machinery serves the mechanical fabricators delivering these duct packages.
