Mining ventilation HVAC at a glance

Mining ventilation is one of the most demanding applications of industrial HVAC ductwork. Underground main ventilation circuits operate at high velocity (8–15 m/s typical), with airflow ranging from 200 m³/s in small base metal mines to 3,000 m³/s in deep underground gold and PGM operations. The duct must survive groundwater seepage, blast vibration, mucking equipment impact, and (in coal mines) intrinsic safety requirements for methane atmospheres. Refuge bay supply must hold positive pressure for 36–96 hours of emergency event, requiring SMACNA Class A or EN 1507 Class D leakage performance.

For Australian mining buyers: SBKJ machinery is installed at mechanical fabrication shops supplying duct packages to the Pilbara iron ore majors, Olympic Dam, NSW and Queensland coal, Mount Isa base metals, Cadia East gold-copper, Kalgoorlie gold, and Cobar/Broken Hill base metal districts. The Australian mining capex cycle is structurally favourable for HVAC duct equipment investment — with USD 60+ billion of new mine projects in the federal Major Projects pipeline as at 2026.

Mining duct categories and their HVAC implications

  • Underground primary ventilation: Main intake and return drifts, fan-shaft connection ducting, booster fan transitions. Typical velocity 10–15 m/s, galvanized G275 spiral or rectangular section, 0.6–1.5 mm gauge. SBTF spiral tubeformer is the standard fabrication equipment.
  • Underground auxiliary ducting: Lay-flat or helical-spring fabric duct from auxiliary fan to face, typically sourced from specialist suppliers; SBKJ machinery covers transition pieces from rigid main to flexible auxiliary.
  • Refuge bay supply: Welded-seam galvanized or stainless duct, leakage class A, 50–200 Pa positive pressure for 36–96 hour duration. SBAL-V auto duct line plus orbital TIG welding integration.
  • Surface processing ventilation: Crusher dust collection, mill ventilation, smelter offgas pre-treatment, ROM bin enclosures. SBAL-V galvanized rectangular duct standard; stainless 304/316 for acid-bearing exhaust.
  • Scrubber pre-treatment: Wet scrubber inlet ducting handling SO&sub2;, NO&sub2;, particulate. Stainless 316 or 2205 duplex for chloride-stress service.
  • Shaft and decline ventilation: Large-diameter spiral duct for shaft top and decline portal ventilation transitions. SBTF spiral tubeformer up to Φ2,000 mm diameter.

SBKJ machinery for mining projects

  • SBTF series spiral tubeformer: Galvanized G275 and stainless 304/316 capability, Φ80–Φ2,000 mm diameter range. Typical mining application: underground primary intake/return ducting, surface processing return air, scrubber pre-treatment.
  • SBAL-V auto duct production line: Up to 1,500 mm wide rectangular duct in galvanized or stainless. TDF flange integration for tight-leakage refuge bay applications. Typical mining application: refuge bay supply, surface processing rectangular sections, scrubber inlet plenum.
  • SBAL-III hydraulic-notch auto duct line: Lower-volume alternative to SBAL-V for shops with mixed mining and commercial work, 1,000 m²/shift output.
  • Orbital TIG welding station: Refuge bay welded longitudinal seam, scrubber pre-treatment welded seam, stainless duty.
  • SBHF-I seam closing machine: 15 m/min seam closing for high-volume galvanized duct production for major Pilbara iron ore expansion projects.

Reference projects and project economics

The current Australian mining capex cycle includes major HVAC duct demand from Pilbara iron ore expansion (Rio Tinto Western Range, BHP South Flank, FMG Iron Bridge), Olympic Dam underground expansion (BHP, USD 1.7 billion ramp-up), the Cadia East panel cave deepening (Newmont), the Mount Isa Operations restart and expansion (Glencore), the Bowen Basin coal projects (BMA Saraji East, Anglo American Aquila), and the Pilbara HMS smelter and direct-reduction iron initiatives. Each of these projects carries a HVAC duct package of USD 5–30 million. SBKJ machinery is installed at the regional mechanical fabricators supplying these projects rather than at the mine itself — the mine does not manufacture its own ductwork.

Globally, the Sub-Saharan copper belt expansion (Zambian KCM and FQM, DRC Kamoa-Kakula and Tenke), the South African PGM and gold operations (Sibanye-Stillwater, Anglo American Platinum), Andean copper (Codelco, Antofagasta, Glencore Las Bambas, BHP Escondida) and Indonesian nickel (Vale Indonesia, Tsingshan partners) collectively represent another USD 3–5 billion annual mining HVAC duct opportunity.
