Typical applications. TDF (Transverse Duct Flange, also called common plate flange or duct mate) is the dominant rectangular duct connection method in modern HVAC, replacing bolted angle iron flanges with a metal flange profile rolled directly into the duct end. TDF connections install three to five times faster than angle flange and meet SMACNA Seal Class A when fitted with the correct gasket. Machines like this one are essential for any rectangular duct line whose customers specify TDF, which today covers virtually all commercial HVAC tenders worldwide.

How it works. TDF flange forming machines roll the metal flange profile directly into the leading and trailing edges of a rectangular duct section using a series of progressive forming rollers. The result is a four-sided integrated flange ready to receive the corner pieces that complete the joint. Modern TDF lines like this one work inline with an auto duct line; standalone units are used in shops that fabricate rectangular duct on hand-loaded production.

Where this fits in your workshop

TDF and lockformer machines are second-stage stations on a rectangular duct line: the duct sheet is cut to size on the coil line, scored and bent into the duct shape on a folder, and then the longitudinal seam is closed on a Pittsburgh or snaplock former. The TDF flange is roll-formed onto the duct ends as the very last step before corner blocks and shipping. On a fully integrated SBAL-V auto duct line, the TDF former is in-line with the cut-to-length shear and there is no separate handling step. On a manual or semi-auto workshop, the TDF former is a stand-alone station immediately after the seam closer.

Operator and maintenance notes. The Metal Bending Machines (TDF) is designed to be run by a single trained operator under normal conditions. Daily checks include lubrication of the forming rolls, inspection of the drive belts and chain tension, and a clean-down of the tool surfaces. Weekly checks add electrical cabinet inspection and a torque check on the main frame fasteners.
