SBKJ in India — market overview

The Indian HVAC duct equipment market is the fastest-growing in Asia-Pacific, structurally driven by four forces: the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme attracting Apple/Foxconn/Tata/Wistron iPhone assembly and Micron semiconductor packaging into Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat; the hyperscale data centre wave concentrated in Mumbai, NCR, Hyderabad and Bangalore; pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing capacity expansion (post-COVID Strategic Investment in Pharma); and the commercial real estate cycle anchored by Bangalore-Hyderabad-Chennai office demand from the Global Capability Centre (GCC) growth.

SBKJ machinery is installed across Indian fabrication shops since the early 2010s — predominantly SBAL-III and SBAL-V auto duct lines for commercial and data centre projects, SBTF spiral tubeformers for industrial ventilation, and TDF flange formers for tight-leakage SMACNA-spec data centre work. Total Indian HVAC duct equipment market is approximately INR 30,000-45,000 crore (USD 3.6-5.4 billion) annually with strong year-on-year growth.

Compliance and standards

  • National Building Code 2016 Volume 2 covers HVAC general requirements.
  • Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) 2017 covers energy efficiency including duct insulation R-values by climate zone (5 zones across India).
  • IS 277 galvanized sheet steel; IS 5577 sheet metal duct construction.
  • SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards 4th Edition or EN 1505 referenced for detailed tier-1 commercial, data centre, semiconductor and hospital projects.
  • ISHRAE Handbook (Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers) the dominant local design reference.
  • IS 4047 cable colour coding; IS 13947 panel components; IS 8623 enclosure ingress protection.
  • PESO certification required for hazardous area work (chemical, fertiliser, refining).

Logistics and shipping

  • Western India: Nhava Sheva (JNPT, Mumbai gateway) 18-25 days from Melbourne; Mundra (Gujarat) 20-26 days; Hazira (Surat) 18-24 days.
  • Southern India: Chennai and Ennore (Tamil Nadu, also gateway for AP and Karnataka) 16-22 days direct.
  • Eastern India: Vishakhapatnam (AP and central India) 18-24 days; Krishnapatnam (AP) 18-24 days; Kolkata Haldia (Eastern India and Northeast) 22-28 days.
  • Special economic zones: JNPT Free Trade Warehousing Zone, Mundra SEZ, Ennore SEZ, Visakhapatnam SEZ, Cochin Smart City SEZ.

Standard shipping is 40-foot high-cube container for machines under 25 tonnes; larger machines on flat-rack via Nhava Sheva or Chennai. Buyers can choose CIF (SBKJ handles freight and marine insurance to nominated port) or DDP for Mumbai/Pune/Bangalore/Chennai (SBKJ handles door-to-door including Indian customs entry).

Customs and Australia-India ECTA

The Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) entered into force in December 2022 and provides preferential tariff treatment for most goods originating in either country. For HVAC duct forming machinery (HS 8479.89), confirm current ECTA preferential duty rate with your Indian customs broker — some categories are at zero tariff, others phasing down across the agreement implementation window. SBKJ supplies the AI-ECTA Certificate of Origin (Form-IND) with each shipment to support preferential duty claims. Standard customs entry: basic duty 7.5% (or AI-ECTA preferential rate), IGST 18% (reclaimable for GST-registered importers), social welfare surcharge 10% on customs duty.
