1. Why roller door, sectional garage, industrial door, security shutter, bollard and automatic gate manufacturing HVAC is its own engineering discipline
An Australian roller door, sectional garage door, industrial door, security roller shutter, bollard, automatic gate and steel shed plant is one of the most diverse heavy-fabrication HVAC environments in the country. Inside a single integrated fabricator the engineering team must design for combustible aluminium fines under NFPA 484 (from extruded shutter slat, gate frame and turnstile machining), combustible steel fines under NFPA 660 (from continuous roll forming, cut-to-length, grinding and structural fabrication), chromium VI fume from stainless 316L welding at K-Rated bollard sleeves and stainless industrial door frames, manganese fume from carbon steel welding, iron oxide fume from grinding and cutting, isocyanate from polyurethane PU adhesive at the sectional panel laminator press and PU powder coat clear, zinc fume and zinc oxide ZnO particulate from the hot-dip galvanise kettle at 450 to 460 degC under AS/NZS 4680, HCl and H2SO4 acid mist from the upstream pickle line, formaldehyde from phenol formaldehyde PF resin in the powder coat polyester chemistry, VOC from MEK, IPA, acetone, ethyl acetate, toluene, xylene, MIBK at the paint booth and silicone Sikaflex polyurethane sealant bead application, and high temperature flue gas from the powder cure oven at 200 degC, the phosphate pretreatment at 60 to 80 degC, the paint cure at 60 to 80 degC, the ageing oven and the hot-dip galvanise kettle at 450 degC. Each process is manageable in isolation. Together they explain why a generic commercial HVAC fabricator treating a door, shutter, bollard or gate plant as just another industrial job replaces duct twice in the first year and walks away from the second contract.
This guide writes against the full breadth of the Australian door, shutter, bollard and gate manufacturing sector. The residential garage door tier is dominated by B&D Doors, the country’s biggest residential garage door manufacturer with the Series 1, 2 and 3 sectional and roller product range across Yatala QLD, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. B&D runs continuous roll forming on Lysaght BlueScope Truecore and Colorbond steel coil, sectional panel assembly with PU foam core insulated panel, powder coat finishing and final assembly under AS/NZS 4505 garage door, AS 4787 sectional door and AS 2820 motor garage door. Steel-Line Garage Doors (Yatala QLD) runs the parallel sectional, roller and industrial sliding door range. Stratco (Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Perth and Melbourne) is Australia’s biggest building products manufacturer with roller door, industrial door, steel-line, industrial shed kit, verandah, pavilion, farm building, stable and aircraft hangar in the product range.
Lysaght (the BlueScope ASX:BSL subsidiary) is the upstream steel coil supplier with Truecore (zinc-magnesium-aluminium ZINCALUME plus magnesium) and Colorbond (pre-painted Zincalume) feeding the roller door slat, steel cladding and structural section market across B&D, Steel-Line, Stratco, Spanline Patio Roofing and Wide Bay Steel. Bradbury Group, Samco, Tishken and JMP supply the roll former equipment that turns the steel coil into roof, wall, structural, truss, sliding door, roller door and shutter slat at the captive and contract roll former sites across Australia.
The industrial high-speed door tier serves manufacturing plants, distribution centres, cold storage, food processing and pharmaceutical plants where fast-cycle door openings are mandatory for productivity and energy efficiency. Albany Door Systems (Australian-owned) is the leading domestic manufacturer with PVC curtain, rubber, acrylic, polyurethane and fire-rated product lines. Dynaco (now part of Entrematic) supplies premium rapid roll doors. Hörmann Australia (the German parent) runs the full sectional, rapid and industrial product range. Rite-Hite (US-owned premium industrial door and loading dock equipment) supplies the high-end logistics tier. DALMATIC Australia rounds out the industrial door tier with food-grade and clean room product. Photocell beam safety, inverter VFD motor control and AS 4789 industrial door compliance govern the product certification.
The security roller shutter tier serves residential, commercial, school, hospital, retail and warehouse markets across Australia, with growing demand driven by cyclone-region weather hardening and insurance requirements. Bradnam, Boss Roller Shutters, Aalux, Stratco (the diversified player), Outback Roller Shutters, Magrini, Pacific Roller Shutters, Westral and Australian Roller Shutters Group ARSG run the captive fabrication operations. The product is continuous roll formed extruded aluminium slat at 50 to 80 mm width or steel slat at 75 to 100 mm width with end caps, guide rails, bottom rail, top axle, motor bracket and tubular electric motor (Somfy, Becker, Acmeda) under AS 4505 garage door, AS 4787 sectional door and AS 4789 industrial door.
The bollard and hostile vehicle mitigation HVM tier is the youngest, fastest-growing segment of the Australian door, shutter and gate sector. Saferoads (Yatala QLD) is the country’s biggest HVM bollard manufacturer with the full K-Rated K4, K8 and K12 product range certified under ASTM F2656 (US Department of State vehicle barrier standard), PAS 68 (UK Publicly Available Specification) and IWA-14-1 (International Workshop Agreement). Apollo Bollard, Yates Steel, Pacific Bollards and Highway Traffic Products round out the tier. The product is concrete-filled steel pipe (typically 168 to 273 mm OD heavy wall) with stainless 316L marine grade outer sleeve, hot-dip galvanised core, concrete-encased foundation, embedded steel base plate, anti-rotation collar and decorative cap. Fixed, removable, retractable and collapsible variants all sit in the product matrix. The market accelerated after the 2017 Bourke Street Mall Melbourne attack and the Bondi Beach NYE Sydney security upgrade, with installations across Australian Federal Police protective service sites, ASIO Counter Terrorism protected places, transport hubs, sporting venues and crowded place assets.
The automatic gate motor tier supplies the motor, planetary gearbox, encoder, remote control, access control card, RFID reader, key code keypad, photocell beam, Li-ion battery backup BESS and solar PV controller that turn a passive sliding, swing or barrier gate into an automatic access control system. Centurion Industries (Yatala QLD) is the biggest domestic player with the CENTUS motor range, sliding gate kit, swing gate kit, boom barrier and access control product. FAAC Australia (Italian premium), Came (Italian premium), Ditec (Italian commercial), BFT (Italian commercial), Liftmaster (US Chamberlain Group, garage door motor), Nice Group (Italian premium), Beninca (Italian commercial) and Roger Technology (Italian premium) round out the tier. The motor is 24 V DC with planetary gearbox, hall-effect encoder, RF 433 MHz remote, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi controller, CCTV integration, access control card and NFC RFID reader, key code keypad, Li-ion BESS and solar PV charge controller.
The fence tier supplies the perimeter security and rural fencing market that sits adjacent to the automatic gate, bollard and HVM market. Anchor Fencing (Caboolture QLD), Hartmann’s, AusFlow, Riverina Wire, Sunmark and Capitol Industries are the leading domestic operators with palisade fence, chain link, ATM secure fence, school fence and farm fence (cattle, horse, sheep, goat) in the product range. Lysaght palisade is the dominant pre-formed palisade picket product.
The heavy industrial steel shed tier supplies the structural steel portal frame, kit-form, DIY, commercial, industrial, rural, aircraft hangar and farm building market. Hi-Light Australia, Spanlift, Spanlift Industrial, Universal Pole Buildings, Pacific Pole, Stratco Industrial and Aussie Made are the leading operators. The product is hot-dip galvanised Z275 steel section under AS 1170.2 wind, AS 1170.4 earthquake and AS 4055 wind, with continuous roll formed Lysaght BlueScope Truecore and Colorbond cladding, fastened by Tek screws and bolted at the portal frame connection.
Across this entire sector, door, shutter, bollard and gate ductwork must survive six demands simultaneously: combustible metal fines compliance (aluminium chip from extruded shutter slat and gate frame machining plus steel fines from continuous roll forming and structural fabrication under NFPA 484 and NFPA 660), chemical resistance (HCl pickle, H2SO4 pickle, anodise SAA/TSA/BSAA acid mist where present, chromate conversion Cr VI legacy capture, caustic etch alkali mist, HF aluminium pre-paint etch), high temperature resistance (450 to 460 degC hot-dip galvanise kettle, 200 degC powder cure oven, 60 to 80 degC phosphate pretreatment, 60 to 80 degC paint cure, ageing oven), dust deflagration resistance (aluminium fines Zone 22 plus combustible metal NFPA 484, steel fines Zone 22 NFPA 660, powder coat Zone 22, insulation PU foam dust, concrete dust at HVM bollard fill station), vapour hazard resistance (powder coat spray booth Zone 1, paint booth Zone 1 VOC, silicone Sikaflex bead Zone 1, anodise bath Zone 1 acid mist where present) and respiratory hazard control (aluminium 1 mg/m3 metal, aluminium oxide 10 mg/m3 inhalable plus 5 mg/m3 respirable, iron oxide Fe2O3 5 mg/m3, manganese Mn 0.2 mg/m3, chromium VI 0.05 mg/m3 STEL stainless welding plus chromate conversion legacy, nickel Ni 1 mg/m3 inhalable plus 0.1 mg/m3 insoluble stainless welding plus nickel-plated plus Inconel, formaldehyde 1 ppm STEL phenol formaldehyde resin plus epoxy primer plus MDF, epoxy plus polyester plus PU powder dust 5 mg/m3, isocyanate TDI/MDI 0.005 ppm STEL polyurethane paint plus primer plus silicone Sikaflex plus urethane adhesive endocrine plus asthma THE KILLER, VOC general plus MEK 200 ppm plus IPA 400 ppm plus acetone 250 ppm plus ethyl acetate 200 ppm plus toluene 50 ppm plus xylene 50 ppm plus MIBK 50 ppm, HF 1.8 ppm STEL aluminium pre-paint etch, HCl 5 ppm plus HNO3 4 ppm plus H2SO4 1 mg/m3 STEL pickling, CO 30 ppm STEL LPG burner plus propane heater plus powder cure 200 degC plus paint cure plus hot-dip galvanise kettle 450 degC, CH4 1.25% LEL LPG plus aluminium melt plus extrusion plus ageing plus powder cure). Each is manageable in isolation; together they explain why door, shutter, bollard and gate HVAC ductwork is a specialist engineering discipline.
This guide walks every major door, shutter, bollard and gate process, explains what changes about the ductwork, and closes with the SBKJ machine configuration that gives an Australian fabricator the production envelope to serve this market from Box Hill North VIC across the country. The sector is large, consolidating, increasingly safety-driven and capital intensive — a fabricator with the right machine fitment, the right material selection knowledge and the right standards understanding can lock in 10 to 20 year service contracts with the major operators.
2. The Australian regulatory stack — AS/NZS 4505, AS 4787, AS 4789, AS 4072, AS/NZS 4680, AS 1668.2, AS 4254, AS/NZS 60079, AS 1530.4, AS 3957, AS 1940, NFPA 484, NFPA 660, NFPA 86, ASTM F2656, PAS 68, IWA-14-1
An Australian door, shutter, bollard and gate manufacturer operates inside a regulatory envelope that combines product standards, building standards, dust hazard standards, fire standards, ventilation standards, combustion standards, hostile vehicle mitigation standards and counter-terrorism standards in a single integrated stack. The fabricator who understands the entire stack — rather than just the slice that applies to one process — designs HVAC ductwork that passes commissioning, audit and insurance underwriting without rework.
AS/NZS 4505 Garage doors and other large access doors is the master product standard for residential and light commercial roller doors and sectional garage doors. It specifies wind loading (cross-referenced to AS 4055 and AS 1170.2), operating force, deflection, lock and latch security, cycle life testing and assembly tolerance for the finished garage door unit. Every B&D Series 1, 2 and 3 product, every Steel-Line garage door, every Stratco roller door, every Centurion gate panel and every Spanline-fitted unit is tested and certified against AS/NZS 4505. The HVAC implication is indirect but critical: a garage door cannot pass AS/NZS 4505 weathering test if the powder coat finish fails accelerated weathering. The powder coat finish cannot pass accelerated weathering if the powder coat booth and powder cure oven HVAC fails to control humidity, dust contamination and Zone 22 dust hazard envelope.
AS 4787 Performance criteria for sectional doors sets the sectional door specific specification: panel deflection under wind load, hinge cycle life (typically 25,000 to 100,000 cycles for residential, 100,000 to 250,000 for industrial), spring counterbalance life, photocell beam safety reversal time, and finger-pinch protection. B&D Series 1, 2 and 3 sectional, Steel-Line sectional and Centurion sectional all certify against AS 4787.
AS 4789 Industrial doors and other commercial doors covers the industrial high-speed, rapid roll, accordion, sliding and folding door tier from Albany Door Systems, Dynaco, Hörmann Australia, Rite-Hite and DALMATIC Australia. Photocell beam safety, inverter VFD motor control, AS 1670 detection compatibility and AS 2118 sprinkler compatibility for fire-rated industrial doors are all in scope.
AS 4072 Components for the protection of openings in fire-resistant separating elements governs fire doors and fire shutters — the fire-rated counterpart to the standard door product. Fire-rated steel shutter is fabricated from heavy gauge 1.6 to 2.0 mm steel slat, hot-dip galvanised, with fire-resistant intumescent seal, smoke seal, fire detection link and gravity drop closer or motorised fire mode closer. The HVAC implication: AS 4072 fire doors are tested under AS 1530.4 fire resistance test with extract duct integrity at 250 degC for 2 hours minimum.
AS 1670 Fire detection, warning, control and intercom systems and AS 2118 Sprinkler systems cross-reference the fire-rated door and shutter product, governing the detection link, sprinkler head proximity and fire mode of operation.
AS/NZS 1428.1 Design for access and mobility sets the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) compliance for door, sliding door and accessible gate product. Door opening force, threshold height, clear width and operator location all govern.
AS 1735 Lifts, escalators and moving walks intersects with the lift door product and the access gate at lift lobby.
AS 4587 Anti-vandal doors applies to school, retail and public asset shutter product.
AS 2820 Motor driven garage doors sets the electrical and motor safety standard for B&D, Steel-Line, Stratco, Centurion and the broader motorised door product.
AS 1170.2 Wind actions, AS 1170.4 Earthquake actions and AS 4055 Wind loads for housing govern the structural wind and earthquake loading on the door, shutter, bollard and gate product, plus the steel shed and portal frame downstream. Cyclone-region Far North QLD, NT and northern WA require N6, C2, C3 and C4 wind classification with enhanced fixing detail.
AS/NZS 5139 Electrical installations — Safety of battery systems for use with power conversion equipment governs the Li-ion BESS that backs up the automatic gate motor and security shutter operation. Lithium-ion battery hazard area classification under AS/NZS 60079 Zone 2 is in scope.
AS 2839 Solid plastic interior fittings and AS 2880 Door sliding manually operated cover residual product detail.
AS/NZS 4680 Hot-dip galvanised (zinc) coatings on fabricated ferrous articles is the master corrosion protection standard. Steel roller door slat, industrial door frame, bollard core, K-Rated HVM post, palisade fence picket, steel shed portal frame and farm gate all require minimum Z275 zinc coating mass. Industrial Galvanizers (Boral), Korvest, Galform, Otway and Pacific Galvanizers run the contract galvanise capacity.
AS/NZS 1554.1 Welding of steel structures, AS/NZS 1554.6 Welding stainless steels for structural purposes and AS 1665 Welding of aluminium structures govern any welded duct, bracket, transition, portal frame, bollard sleeve and gate frame fabricated locally.
AS 1668.2 The use of ventilation and airconditioning in buildings — mechanical ventilation in buildings drives the building-side HVAC envelope for the fabrication shop. Process LEV branches connect to the building extract main; building supply makeup air balances both the process and the comfort load. For a roller door, sectional door, industrial door, security shutter, bollard or gate plant the typical air change rate is 4 to 6 ACH for general fabrication, 8 to 12 ACH for the powder coat room and 6 to 10 ACH for the structural welding cell.
AS 4254 Ductwork for air-handling systems in buildings sets the duct construction grade. Parts 1 (flexible duct) and 2 (rigid duct) define gauge selection by pressure class and span, lock seam type, flange type, hanger spacing and pressure test method. For door, shutter, bollard and gate plant duct, the dominant construction grades are AS 4254 medium pressure (1000 Pa) for process branches and AS 4254 high pressure (2500 Pa) for cyclone, filter bank and hot-dip galvanise kettle inlets.
AS 1530.4 Methods for fire tests on building materials, components and structures governs fire-rated extract duct. For powder cure oven exhaust at 200 degC service temperature with potential isocyanate vapour, fire-rated extract duct is verified to 250 degC for 2 hours per AS 1530.4. Heavy gauge 1.6 to 2.0 mm carbon steel or stainless duct with continuous TIG welded longitudinal seam meets the test requirement.
AS/NZS 60079 Explosive atmospheres is the family of hazardous area classification standards. AS/NZS 60079.10.1 covers gas, vapour and mist; AS/NZS 60079.10.2 covers dust. For a door, shutter, bollard and gate plant the Zone 1 vapour areas are inside the chromate conversion bath, the powder coat spray booth and the silicone Sikaflex bead application station. The Zone 1 LPG forklift area, the propane heater feed and the adhesive solvent zone classify under AS/NZS 60079. The Zone 2 Li-ion motor BESS area applies to the automatic gate motor assembly. The Zone 22 dust hazard areas are at the extruded slat machining, structural steel cut and grind, sectional panel laminator press, powder coat booth filter house, cyclone discharge and HVM bollard concrete fill station.
AS 3957 Ventilation of fire and smoke isolated stair shafts cross-references the dust hazard area classification with explicit guidance on aluminium fines, steel fines and powder coat dust.
AS 1940 Storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids governs the bulk storage of solvent (MEK, IPA, acetone, ethyl acetate, toluene, xylene, MIBK), thinner, adhesive, silicone Sikaflex polyurethane sealant and pre-paint cleaner.
NFPA 484 Standard for combustible metals is the global authority on aluminium, magnesium and titanium fines hazard at the extruded slat machining, gate frame end-milling, turnstile assembly grinder, punch and drill operations. The 2025 revision of NFPA 660 consolidates NFPA 484, NFPA 654 and NFPA 664 into a unified combustible dust standard.
NFPA 660 (2025) Standard for combustible dusts and particulate solids covers steel fines from continuous roll forming, cut-to-length, grinding and structural fabrication, plus powder coat dust, PU foam dust at the sectional panel insulated panel assembly and concrete dust at HVM bollard fill station.
NFPA 86 Standard for ovens and furnaces governs the powder cure oven at 200 degC, the phosphate pretreatment at 60 to 80 degC, the paint cure at 60 to 80 degC, the ageing oven, and the hot-dip galvanise kettle at 450 to 460 degC. NFPA 86 specifies burner management, flame safeguard, ventilation purge cycle, LEL monitoring on the combustion air, and explosion venting on the furnace chamber.
ASTM F2656 Standard test method for crash testing of vehicle security barriers, PAS 68 Specification for vehicle security barriers and IWA-14-1 Vehicle security barriers govern the K-Rated K4, K8 and K12 hostile vehicle mitigation HVM bollard product at Saferoads Yatala QLD plus Apollo Bollard plus Yates Steel plus Pacific Bollards plus Highway Traffic Products. K4 stops a 6.8 tonne vehicle at 50 km/h, K8 stops the same at 65 km/h, K12 stops the same at 80 km/h. The ratings drive structural steel grade, concrete fill specification, foundation engineering and stainless 316L marine grade outer sleeve specification.
AS/NZS 1715 and AS/NZS 1716 Respiratory protective equipment set the last-line-of-defence respiratory protection programme. P2 and P3 mechanical filter for aluminium, steel, powder coat dust. Acid gas cartridge for HCl pickle, H2SO4 pickle, HF aluminium pre-paint etch service. Combination cartridge for isocyanate at powder cure oven exhaust maintenance and Sikaflex polyurethane bead application.
NCC Volume 1 and 2 (National Construction Code) sets the building code envelope across the regulatory framework, including state variations under VBA Victoria, NSW Fair Trading, QLD QBCC, WA Building Commission, SA Consumer and Business Services CBS, TAS, ACT Building Authority and NT Building Commission.
The state regulatory framework adds NSW Fair Trading, VIC Victorian Building Authority VBA, QLD Queensland Building and Construction Commission QBCC, WA Building Commission, SA Consumer and Business Services CBS, TAS Consumer Building and Occupational Services CBOS, ACT Access Canberra Building Authority and NT Building Commission. SafeWork Australia plus the state WHS regulators (SafeWork NSW, WorkSafe Victoria, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland WHSQ, WorkSafe WA, SafeWork SA, WorkSafe Tasmania, WorkSafe ACT and NT WorkSafe) govern the workplace exposure and engineering control framework.
3. Steel coil decoiler, uncoiler, leveller, roll former and cut-to-length — Lysaght BlueScope Truecore and Colorbond, B&D Doors, Stratco, Steel-Line, Spanline, Bradbury Samco Tishken JMP
Continuous roll forming is the upstream process that turns Lysaght BlueScope steel coil into roof, wall, structural section, truss, sliding door panel, roller door slat (75 to 100 mm steel) and security shutter slat (50 to 80 mm steel). The process runs in five stages: steel coil decoiler and uncoiler; coil leveller to remove residual coil set; lubricator (Quaker Houghton and Castrol roll former oil); continuous roll former (typically 12 to 24 stations forming the slat profile through progressive bending); cut-to-length flying shear at the line exit; and stacker or coiler. The dominant equipment brands are Bradbury Group, Samco, Tishken and JMP supplied directly from the manufacturer to the captive and contract roll former sites across Australia.
Lysaght (the BlueScope ASX:BSL subsidiary) supplies the upstream steel coil with Truecore (zinc-magnesium-aluminium ZINCALUME plus magnesium for enhanced corrosion resistance) and Colorbond (pre-painted Zincalume) feeding the roller door slat, steel cladding and structural section market. B&D Doors, Stratco, Steel-Line, Spanline Patio Roofing, Wide Bay Steel, Hi-Light Australia, Spanlift and the broader steel shed and door fabricator base draw on the Lysaght coil supply.
The HVAC envelope at a roll former line is modest compared to downstream chemistry processes but still significant. The roll former oil mist generated by the lubricator-applied roll former oil at the forming station is captured by a low temperature LEV with mist eliminator. The oil mist STEL is 5 mg/m3 (mineral oil mist). Capture is dedicated 0.9 to 1.0 mm galvanised LEV at 10 to 14 m/s capture velocity over the roll former line, ducted to a coalescing mist filter with oil recovery. The recovered oil is recycled back into the lubricator feed.
The cut-to-length flying shear zone generates a low to moderate steel fines load, ducted at 18 to 22 m/s transport velocity to a bag filter or cartridge filter. Iron oxide Fe2O3 STEL is 5 mg/m3. The fines load is much lower than at a structural steel cut-and-grind operation because the shear cut is clean and the slat is roll-formed (not machined).
The stacker or coiler zone generates no significant fume or dust.
The SBKJ machine fitment for the roll former line zones is the SBAL-V auto duct line at galvanised setting for 0.9 to 1.0 mm low temperature LEV mains, the SBFB-1500 spiral former for round duct on the cut-to-length flying shear extract, the SBLR-600 lock former for rectangular branch duct at the mist eliminator hood, and the SBPC1500 plasma cutter for custom hood geometry at the roll former line transitions.
4. Roller shutter slat continuous roll forming — Bradnam, Boss Roller Shutters, Aalux, Stratco, Magrini, Pacific Roller Shutters, Westral, ARSG, AS 4505, AS 4787, AS 4789
Roller shutter slat continuous roll forming is the parallel upstream process to roof and wall cladding roll forming, but with a tighter slat geometry and a stronger split between steel and aluminium product. The product is continuous roll formed steel slat at 75 to 100 mm width (typically 0.5 to 0.8 mm Lysaght BlueScope Colorbond pre-painted Zincalume) for roller doors, industrial doors and large commercial shutters; or extruded aluminium slat at 50 to 80 mm width (typically 1.0 to 1.5 mm wall thickness) for residential security shutters, light commercial shutters and architectural shutters where weight is the constraint.
Bradnam, Boss Roller Shutters, Aalux, Stratco (the diversified player with extruded aluminium slat in their security shutter range), Outback Roller Shutters, Magrini, Pacific Roller Shutters, Westral and Australian Roller Shutters Group ARSG run the captive fabrication operations. The continuous roll formed steel slat line feeds from Lysaght BlueScope Colorbond coil through a Bradbury-style roll former; the extruded aluminium slat is sourced from Capral, Sapa, Alspec or imported and machined locally for slat link, end cap, guide rail, bottom rail, top axle and motor bracket assembly. Tubular electric motors from Somfy, Becker and Acmeda drive the operation under AS 2820.
The HVAC envelope at a roller shutter slat plant has three streams.
The continuous roll former for steel slat mirrors the section 3 roll former line above — oil mist at the lubricator station, low steel fines at the cut-to-length shear, captured by 0.9 to 1.0 mm galvanised LEV at 10 to 14 m/s for oil mist and 18 to 22 m/s for steel fines.
The aluminium slat machining centre for extruded aluminium slat punching, drilling, end-milling and routing generates aluminium chip and aluminium oxide fines under NFPA 484. Aluminium STEL is 1 mg/m3 TWA, aluminium oxide 10 mg/m3 inhalable and 5 mg/m3 respirable. Aluminium fines are NFPA 484 combustible metal with Al + H2O water reactivity. Capture is dedicated 0.9 to 1.2 mm galvanised spiral at 18 to 22 m/s transport velocity from the SBFB-1500 to an explosion-vented or explosion-suppressed cartridge filter bank with downstream HEPA polish, conductive bonded throughout, earth-bonded to building structure, no spark sources within 6 m of duct, no aluminium-to-aluminium friction at any duct fitting, and inerted collection with mineral oil before bagging. AS 3957 plus AS/NZS 60079.10.2 plus NFPA 484 plus NFPA 660 (2025) define the dust hazard area.
The slat link and end cap assembly station at ambient temperature generates low load fume from any solvent-based adhesive used in the link bonding operation. VOC STEL applies: MEK 200 ppm, IPA 400 ppm, acetone 250 ppm, ethyl acetate 200 ppm. Capture is low load LEV with carbon filter polish.
The SBKJ machine fitment for the roller shutter slat zone is the SBFB-1500 spiral former for 1.0 to 1.2 mm galvanised spiral aluminium fines extract duct, the SBTF-1500 / SBTF-1602 / SBTF-2020 spiral former for larger trunk mains to the cartridge filter bank, the SBAL-III auto duct line for rectangular hood plenums, the SBLR-600 lock former for Pittsburgh lock seam on the hood plenum sides, and the SBPC1500 plasma cutter for custom geometry at the aluminium slat machining hood and the cartridge filter bank inlet transitions.
5. Sectional door panel assembly — B&D Series 1, 2, 3, Steel-Line, Centurion, Stratco, Spanline; insulated panel PU foam core, Bondor, Kingspan, Metecno, Sahbox, Crane Composites; continuous laminator press, adhesive, isocyanate
Sectional door panel assembly is the most chemistry-intensive process in the Australian door manufacturing sector. The product is an insulated panel sandwich with steel skin (galvanised, Colorbond, or Lysaght BlueScope) bonded to a polyurethane PU foam core (40 to 80 mm thickness depending on R-value target) via continuous laminator press at 60 to 80 degC press cure under polyurethane adhesive. The continuous laminator delivers a 1200 mm by 6000 mm panel sheet at typical cycle time 8 to 12 minutes per cycle. Downstream the panel is cut to length, hinged, sealed with weather strip, fitted with rollers and lift handles, and assembled into the sectional door product.
B&D Series 1, 2 and 3 (Australia’s biggest residential garage door range) sectional product, Steel-Line sectional, Centurion sectional and Stratco sectional all run insulated panel sandwich assembly. Spanline runs the equivalent process for patio sectional and verandah sectional products. Bondor, Kingspan, Metecno, Sahbox and Crane Composites supply the insulated panel base material to the broader market and to the captive operations.
The HVAC envelope at the sectional panel assembly has six distinct streams.
The continuous laminator press hood at 60 to 80 degC press cure under polyurethane adhesive is the dominant isocyanate exposure zone. The adhesive is typically MDI-based polyurethane (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate). MDI STEL is 0.005 ppm. The HVAC capture is a continuous hood directly above the press exit with 1.0 m/s capture velocity, ducted in 316L stainless at 1.0 mm gauge for the first 5 m downstream (where condensation risk is highest), continuous TIG welded seam from the SBSF-1525, transitioning to galvanised downstream where the duct cools to ambient. The discharge is to a carbon adsorber or thermal oxidiser for VOC capture, with explosion-rated fan motor and intrinsically safe instrumentation under AS/NZS 60079 Zone 1. Combination cartridge respirator under AS/NZS 1716 for any operator working within 3 m of the press during cure cycle. Recirculation to the makeup air is prohibited.
The polyurethane foam core mixing and dispensing station generates isocyanate aerosol at the mixing head plus PU foam dust at the foam trim station. PU foam dust STEL is 5 mg/m3. Capture is dedicated AS/NZS 60079 Zone 1 ventilation at 1.0 m/s face velocity, ducted in 316L stainless at 1.0 mm gauge with continuous TIG welded seam.
The PU foam dust extraction at the foam trim station generates PU foam dust with isocyanate residual. The dust is combustible under NFPA 660 (2025). Capture is 0.9 mm galvanised spiral from the SBFB-1500 at 14 to 18 m/s transport velocity, conductive bonded throughout, earth-bonded to building structure, to a cartridge filter bank with explosion vent or explosion suppression.
The steel skin pre-clean station for the Lysaght BlueScope Truecore or Colorbond skin generates trace solvent VOC from the cleaner. VOC STEL applies. Capture is low load LEV with carbon filter polish.
The cut-to-length and hinge assembly station generates steel fines at the cut station and minimal fume at the hinge assembly. Capture is 0.9 mm galvanised LEV at 18 m/s transport velocity for steel fines.
The weather strip and Sikaflex polyurethane sealant bead application station generates isocyanate exposure (Sikaflex is a urethane-based sealant with MDI content) at 0.005 ppm STEL. Capture is dedicated AS/NZS 60079 Zone 1 ventilation, 316L stainless duct at 1.0 mm gauge with continuous TIG welded seam.
The SBKJ machine fitment for the sectional panel assembly zone is the SBAL-V with stainless option for 316L mains at the laminator press hood and PU foam dispensing station, the SBSF-1525 for continuous TIG seam on the 316L stainless, the SBFB-1500 for 0.9 mm galvanised spiral on the PU foam dust extraction, the SBPC1500 for custom hood geometry at the press exit, the SBLR-600 for Pittsburgh lock rectangular branches, the SB-ZF1500 for trunk main TIG bead, and the SBTF-1500 for larger spiral trunk mains.

The aluminium pre-paint and anodise envelope applies to the extruded aluminium slat at Bradnam, Boss Roller Shutters, Aalux, Stratco, Magrini, Pacific Roller Shutters, Westral, ARSG, Centurion (extruded gate frame and turnstile), and the broader extruded aluminium product tier across the Australian door, shutter, bollard and gate sector. The chemistry is identical to the aluminium window and door industry covered in the companion guide, with the same Cr VI phasing under the Aluminium Anodisers Council of Australasia AACA programme.
The sequence is: profile inspection and edge masking; alkaline degrease at 50 to 60 degC with NaOH plus modifier; rinse cascade; deionised rinse; either chromate conversion (legacy Cr VI Iridite NCP, Alodine 1200, Bonderite M-CR 1200) or trivalent Cr III conversion (Bonderite M-CR T 5200, Alodine T 5900, SurTec 650) for the powder coat path; or alkaline etch (50 g/L NaOH) then nitric desmut (30 to 50% HNO3) then sulfuric acid anodise SAA (18 to 22% H2SO4 at 18 to 22 degC) or tartaric sulfuric anodise TSA or boric sulfuric anodise BSAA then rinse then dye then thermal seal for the anodise path.
The HVAC envelope is dominated by acid mist and alkali mist capture.
Chromate conversion legacy Cr VI at 0.05 mg/m3 STEL is the IARC Group 1 carcinogen. Dedicated 316L stainless LEV at 1.5 to 2.0 mm gauge with HEPA polish on the discharge and stack monitoring. The Cr III replacement needs standard 316L without the HEPA polish; the volume of duct dedicated to Cr VI service drops 60 to 80% during line refurbishment.
Sulfuric acid anodise SAA, tartaric sulfuric anodise TSA and boric sulfuric anodise BSAA generate sulfuric acid mist against the STEL of 1 mg/m3. Continuous canopy hood directly above the bath at 60 to 80 ACH, ducted in 316L stainless at 1.5 to 2.0 mm gauge to a wet alkaline scrubber.
Caustic etch at 50 g/L NaOH plus modifier at 60 to 80 degC generates NaOH alkali mist STEL 2 mg/m3. 316L stainless duct at 1.2 to 1.5 mm gauge to a wet scrubber with continuous pH control. 50% NaOH at 60 to 80 degC gives catastrophic alkaline burns at line of sight contact — full emergency eyewash and safety shower at the bath face.
Nitric desmut at 30 to 50% HNO3 generates nitric fume against HNO3 STEL 4 ppm. 316L stainless duct at 1.5 mm gauge to wet scrubber.
HF aluminium pre-paint etch at 0.5 to 2% HF is largely phased post-2003 under the AACA programme due to HF STEL 1.8 ppm and acute spill hazard. Where any residual HF capacity remains, 316L stainless duct at 1.5 mm gauge, emergency eyewash, calcium gluconate gel on site, AS/NZS 1716 acid gas cartridge respirator with full face piece.

Powder coat is the dominant industrial finish on Australian roller door, sectional garage door, industrial door, security shutter, bollard, automatic gate and steel shed product. Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings (formerly Interpon), Dulux Powder Coatings (DuluxGroup ASX:DLX), Jotun Powder Coatings, Tiger Coatings, IGI Coatings and PPG Industries Australia supply the powder. B&D Doors, Steel-Line, Stratco, Centurion, Lysaght and the broader fabricator base run captive powder coat lines at their integrated sites. The applicator tier is governed by the Powder Coating Federation of Australia PCFA.
The powder coat process runs in five stages: phosphate pretreatment (zinc phosphate or iron phosphate at 60 to 80 degC) or chromate conversion (covered in section 9); deionised rinse; dry-off; electrostatic spray gun application in the powder coat booth at 0.5 to 1.0 m/s face velocity; powder cure oven at 200 degC for 20 minutes; cool down; inspection. The chemistry is epoxy primer, polyester topcoat (the dominant exterior-grade architectural finish), polyurethane PU clear (for premium gloss retention) and hybrid epoxy-polyester for interior applications.
Phosphate pretreatment 60 to 80 degC exhaust generates water vapour with trace acid mist (the phosphate bath chemistry is mildly acidic). Capture is manual extraction plus SBSF-1525 partial TIG seam at the hood plenum, ducted in 316L stainless at 1.2 mm gauge to a low-temperature wet scrubber.
Powder coat booth is sized for controlled airflow at 0.5 to 1.0 m/s face velocity at the booth opening with overspray drawn by extract through a cyclone, a cartridge or panel filter and a downstream HEPA polish. The recovered powder is recirculated back into the spray gun feed via the powder recovery system at 95 to 98% utilisation efficiency. Duct construction is medium gauge galvanised carbon steel sheet to AS 4254 medium pressure with conductive bonding throughout to dissipate electrostatic charge. The powder cloud inside the booth is a Zone 1 vapour hazard area under AS/NZS 60079.10.1; the powder dust at the cyclone discharge and filter house is a Zone 22 dust hazard area under AS/NZS 60079.10.2 and AS 3957. NFPA 33 spray finish standard cross-references the booth construction. Epoxy, polyester and PU resin powder dust STEL is 5 mg/m3.
Powder cure oven 200 degC for 20 minutes runs under NFPA 86 burner management with LPG or natural gas firing. The exhaust handles polyester and polyurethane cure outgassing including trace isocyanate (TDI and MDI STEL 0.005 ppm) and formaldehyde from phenol formaldehyde resin systems (STEL 1 ppm). Cure oven exhaust at 200 degC is heavier gauge mild steel insulated duct or aluminised steel at 1.6 to 2.0 mm, with continuous TIG welded longitudinal seam where the duct passes through a fire-isolated zone (AS 1530.4 verified to 250 degC for 2 hours). The SBSF-1525 or SB-ZF1500 stitch welder delivers the continuous seam. The SBAL-III auto duct line handles the heavy gauge coil feed.
Solvent paint booth for specialist PU clear over powder coat or two-component PU industrial paint generates VOC including MEK 200 ppm, IPA 400 ppm, acetone 250 ppm, ethyl acetate 200 ppm, toluene 50 ppm, xylene 50 ppm, MIBK 50 ppm. Capture is dedicated AS/NZS 60079 Zone 1 ventilation with explosion-rated fan motor, intrinsically safe instrumentation and HEPA-polished discharge to permitted stack. VOC capture media is activated carbon adsorber or thermal oxidiser.
Isocyanate cure at the polyurethane powder cure path generates trace TDI and MDI at 0.005 ppm STEL. Isocyanate is THE KILLER of the powder coat application worker tier and is under active phase-out review by SafeWork Australia. The HVAC capture at the cure oven exhaust must be continuous with no recirculation back to the booth supply.
The SBKJ machine fitment for the powder coat and paint zones is the SBAL-III auto duct line for heavy gauge 1.6 to 2.0 mm aluminised carbon steel mains, the SBFB-1500 for round spiral booth extract, the SBPC1500 for booth transitions, the SBSF-1525 or SB-ZF1500 for continuous TIG seam on fire-rated extract, the SBLR-600 for Pittsburgh lock rectangular duct, the SBTF-2020 for the trunk main to the cartridge filter bank and the cyclone, and the SBAL-V with stainless option for the 316L phosphate pretreatment manual exhaust.
11. Hot-dip galvanise AS/NZS 4680 Z275 kettle 450 degC — Industrial Galvanizers Boral, Korvest, Galform, Otway, Pacific Galvanizers; H2SO4 18% / HCl 16% pickle, zinc fume 5 mg/m3, Pb 0.05 mg/m3

The duct stack is heavy gauge 309S or 310S stainless at the kettle face above 600 degC equivalent capture (the radiant heat from the molten zinc face is intense even though the bath itself is at 450 to 460 degC), transitioning to 316L downstream of the air cooler at below 250 degC. Continuous TIG welded longitudinal seam under SBSF-1525 or SB-ZF1500. The kettle exhaust terminates at a wet alkaline scrubber for HCl and SO2 capture plus a bag filter for zinc oxide ZnO particulate.
Quench in water tank at ambient. Steam generation. Low load LEV.
Passivation in dilute chromate solution (legacy Cr VI) or trivalent Cr III. Capture in 316L stainless.
Inspection at ambient. No fume.
Galvanised carbon steel duct fails in 8 to 12 weeks on kettle exhaust service. 304 stainless fails to chloride stress corrosion cracking and pitting at the HCl pickle vapour zone in 18 to 30 months. Only 316L plus high temperature 309S/310S survives the service envelope.
The SBKJ machine fitment for the hot-dip galvanise zones is the SBAL-V with stainless option for 316L mains, the SBSF-1525 for continuous TIG seam, the SBPC1500 for kettle hood transitions and the air cooler transition, the SBLR-600 for rectangular Pittsburgh lock seam on the kettle face canopy, the SBFB-1500 for spiral round duct on the kettle exhaust main downstream of the air cooler, and the SBTF-2020 for trunk mains to the wet scrubber and ZnO bag filter.
